Vermont Turkey

In our mother’s house in Londonderry, Vermont, the best seat in the house is always by the window. You could sit for hours watching the light shift across the fields with Stratton Mountain standing tall in the background. It’s a quiet landscape, but if you watch closely, you’ll realize it’s actually a very busy thoroughfare.

The daily "commute" begins like clockwork. In the morning and again in the afternoon, the local residents make their way across the grass—playful foxes darting about and large, stately flocks of turkeys marching with purpose. But the real destination for every critter in the woods is the old apple tree that stands just a few feet from the glass.

One afternoon, we were treated to a particularly delightful sight: a turkey with a very discerning palate. He wasn't just foraging; he was on a mission. We watched as he carefully inspected the apples on the ground, choosing only the reddest, most perfect apples to snack on.
