On Swan’s Island, "rush hour" looks a little different than it does on the mainland. This whimsical notecard captures a quintessential island moment: a flock of speckled guinea fowl claiming their right-of-way right in the middle of Atlantic Road.
These charismatic (and very determined) birds are a staple of island life, famously unfazed by the cars waiting behind them. As any resident or frequent visitor knows, when the guineas decide to take a stroll down one of the island's main thoroughfares, there is only one thing to do: slow down, take a breath, and wait for the feathers to clear.
This card is a playful tribute to the "island time" pace we all love—a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are worth slowing down for. It’s the perfect note for anyone who has ever had to hit the brakes for a feathered crossing or for those who simply appreciate the quirky, slow-moving charm of Downeast Maine.
Pavement Patrol On Atlantic Road is a reproduction of an acrylic on canvas by Gretchen Chauncey, 2026.
