Back Bay Street

Original acrylic painting Back Bay Street by Gretchen Chauncey hangs over the kitchen sink. The room has fire engine red walls and white cabinets. Chauncey Art Collective stationery collection.

When Gretchen bought her Boston brownstone in the late 1990s, the tiny kitchen had a big problem: no window. Since adding one wasn't an option, she got creative. She painted a vibrant street scene to hang above the sink—an exact replica of the view that would have been outside. With the addition of fire-engine red walls, this bold and personal design defined her kitchen for two decades, until she made the move to Maine in 2018.
